Nuts & Bolts questionnaire (course evaluations)

Dear Faculty & TA's,
We have approached the time for The Nuts & Bolts Survey (student
evaluations), which is a very useful (optional) tool for receiving timely
feedback on teaching performance and style. If you choose to do this
survey, student responses will only be seen by you. There are two
options:
More... Close <--/twistyPlugin twikiMakeVisibleInline-->
1. We can set up an online version of the survey on Blackboard. This is
especially useful in large classes because you can view responses in
tabulated form, making them easier to interpret. This survey is also left
open throughout the semester, allowing students to revisit and write
additional comments. If you are interested in conducting an online
survey, send e-mail to Dick Furnas at ref2@cornell and cc: me
(hko1@cornell). Please include what course you are teaching.
2. The hard copy version of the questionnaire is also available. A pdf
is attached to this message, and I can provide you with copies upon
request.
Thank you.

Hi Birgit,
In reference to Bill's e-mail, when you get a chance can you provide me
with a hard copy of the on-line version of the questionnaire? Also,
before I can move forward with sending out a reminder notice, at some
point I need to confirm with you/Dick the process and how much ITO support
can be provided to faculty interested in the online version. I ask that
you or Dick touch base with me at your earliest convenience so I can get
this squared away.
Thank you again for your help.
Heather

Birgit,
I've asked Heather to hold off on sending out information about the Nuts &
Bolts questionnaire until there's been a chance to confirm the process for
supporting any course instructors who wish to use the on-line version this
year.
I've talked briefly with Dick Furnas and Maria, about support for the
on-line version through the Instructional Technology Office. I think Dick
can work out with you how much support can be provided though ITO and how
much you or other members of the committee can offer to those interested in
the on-line version.
I've also asked Heather to check with you or Dick to get a hard copy of the
on-line "Nuts & Bolts questionnaire, and we would then use that as the
questionnaire for instructor's who elect to continue using a paper survey
form.
I'll have Heather review a draft notice on the Nuts & bolts reminder to the
teaching faculty with you and Lars next week and then she can send out the
reminder to them after that.
If there are any other issues that you think need to be addressed before
the notice is sent out, please let Heather know - I'll be out of the office
next week.
Thanks.
Bill

Birgit/Dick,
Birgit, per your suggestion this morning (& e-mail) the best way to get
the ball rolling on this is to go ahead and e-mail allfac asking
instructors to notify Dick (cc: me) who is interested in using the online
version of Nuts & Bolts and to provide the information that is needed
(Birgit, I will have you look at the e-mail before I send it). This way
it will give Dick enough time to coordinate the student technicians for
course builder set up (as done last semester).
Once we get the courses set up I can send the official reminder notice to
faculty including any ITO support that may be provided to them. By then
Bill should be back and can provide his input.
I will hold off on doing this until I hear back from you both. Let me
know what you think.
Thanks.

Dick,
this is my understanding also. We looked at the possibility of other
survey techniques as well, but discarded them because we didn't want
whole fraternities filling out the surveys, but restrict them to the
students in the course.
The way it was done in the past was to send out an e-mail about the SHORT
version of the survey to allfac, asking who would be interested in using
an electronic version of Nuts and Bolts. A copy of the e-mail from last
spring semester is probably still available in Arletta's mailbox. I call
look at it and edit it a little.
The process is as follows: Those who would like to use the electronic
version are suppose to send an e-mail to Me? Heather? Dick( I think this
would be best) with the following info:
Class taught
Blackboard web site yes or no.
Those who answer yes get an e-mail asking to include to give the person
who is actually doing the work course builder privileges and report back
when this is done.
For those who answer a bb website is setup the students registered are
uploaded and the survey is setup. When done the instructor receives an
e-mail. This email also includes instructions about accessing the results
of the survey.
In general the survey should be open for the whole semester.
I hope this explains it and I am sorry that it is so complicated , but it
was the best we could come up with after looking at all the software
which is available at Cornell for software.

Hi Dick,
Following the same process as last semester, Lars has agreed to having
faculty interested in the online survey contact you via e-mail (cc'g me).
I am giving you a heads up on this before I send out the e-mail to
faculty. I will also include a deadline date for them to respond. This
will allow you enough time for coordinating set up on Blackboard (it's my
understanding that students helped with set up up last semester). They
will also have the option of using the hard copy questionnaire, which may
limit the number interested in the online version.
Please confirm receipt of this e-mail. I'd like to get the ball rolling
asap.
Thanks again.
