  • Summary Counts for Codes at the 100 level (Code00) and CogBeh by Year and totals for the series. Also, the Timeline Graphs are now current, the data points are now done with an opacity of .33 so overlapping points are more readily distinguished. Zoom in on the pdf to appreciate the goodness. -- DickFurnas - 18 Apr 2012

  • The latest IMP data tweaks are now in IMP_Reconciled.ods no extraneous sheets remain in the spreadsheet. Further sanity checks found a missing CogBeh row. -- DickFurnas - 16 Apr 2012
  • Uploaded latest :ods: spreadsheet. The new sheet IMP_Data_noJ was made by pasting from the original excel spreadsheets again, this time deleting the portion of column I where a column J was present. A further spreadsheet checks that both IMP_Data and IMP_Data_noJ sheets have the same data throughout except for the mergers. All looks good. -- DickFurnas - 09 Mar 2012
  • Added Sanity Checks below for all columns in the sheet IMP_Data_noJ of the :ods: spreadsheet. -- DickFurnas - 09 Mar 2012

Sanity Checks

Changed:
<
<
Here are some quick checks of the columns of data in the master spreadsheet, summarizing the number of occurrances of various entries. These may provide clues to data entry errors such as entries in the wrong column or the like. These are similar to the summaries for Topic and CogBeh codes but are arranged explicitly by column in the master spreadsheet. They are presented as tables which can be sorted by clicking on the column header of the table.

Sanity checks of the data were performed on the columns of data in the master spreadsheet, summarizing the number of occurrances of various entries. These provided clues to data entry errors such as entries in the wrong column or the like. These were similar to the summaries for Topic and CogBeh codes but were arranged explicitly by column in the master spreadsheet. They were presented as tables which could be sorted by clicking on the column header of the table.

  • Created by copying the column from the spreadsheet to the clipboard and invoking the following command in Terminal on the Mac before pasting in here:
pbpaste | sort -n | uniq -c | sed -e 's/^ */|/' -e 's/ /|/' -e 's/$/|/' | pbcopy
Deleted:

<
  • The row count total is inconsistent across columns since a copied column does not put empty beginning and/or trailing rows on the clipboard. Not a feature in this context, but probably is in many others...

2 "find a counter example" that is logical reasoning---how does that help you answer the question--this is an R
1 "recount?"
1 "these might be As given the openended nature of the problem" your original comment is why I believe these are A's
1 ?
1 ? 1301 might include 30-60,90? Or is that 1303?
4 A bc I don't think that this is algorithmic yet.
1 A bc explain
1 A bc not a new solution, work already done.
1 A bc representation
2 A bc representation change
3 A because choosing a method and having to explain.
1 After thinking more about ti I think that an R is inorder because of the three kinds of intersection and the resulting regions you get .
1 After year 1, I believe that author intends them to be thinking with variables, hence the 602
1 Based on what we said in year 1, 511 doesn't fit here.
1 Believe tht 507 is included in the 508 (set up and solve in inequality)
1 C because student generated problems rarely have "nice" solutions.
4 Cog Beh R because they are asked to try to find a rule
46 Comment
1 Determinants are related heavily to systems of eq and how to solve systems, so I think we need both codes. 605 and 602
1 Do we really need the 1510 as well?
1 FUNCTION LANGUAGE
1 Hmm 714 too or 806? If the problem is drawing primarily on the synthetic geomtry concepts (ie no coordinates) then 714 belongs too.
1 I believe that 503 is subsumed by the 508
1 I believe that the R behavior is in part b/
1 I do think that these should be coded seperately
1 I seenow that his is not an r
1 I think that 502 is subsumed
1 I think that the code should be for a single linear inequality… 508 and 510?
1 I think the assumption should be for a graphic calculator
1 I think this is a use of patteeerns, harking back to year 1
1 I think this system of 4 eq in 4 unks should be coded right? Or is it just subsumed in inverse of a matrix?
1 I'm not sure that students have internalized these skills in such a way that they are algorithmic, hence the A
1 If part a is A, then part b should be
1 Incidence relationships in three D?This might be an exemplar for this code. It is NOT clear form context that this is a coordinate geometry problem it seems more like coordiante free question hence the 700 level code.
1 Interdisciplanary connection: Social Studies/US History
1 Isn't 502 subsumed?
1 K bc already done.
2 K because told method to use = algorithmic
1 May use cards to mimic scenario
1 NOT SURE ABOUT 506
2 NOT SURE ABOUT 506 FOR THESE, SINCE STUDENTS ARE NOT ASKED TO WRITE SYMBOLICALLY..
1 Not sur eabout the A, but 1st time with 3-var, so kids have to extend process
1 Not sure why this is a K if the others are A's?
1 Outside research. Students are told to look for a proof.
1 Possible Interdisciplanary Connection
1 R bc creating their own
2 R bc have to synthesize information
1 R because error analysis is a big step
17 Reconcile Comment
1 Reconcile Comments
1 Reconcile comment
2 Same issue as #1, not a system
3 Still not algorithmic… maybe year 3?
1 TIME PLOT
2 The TM says this is a "review" to get ready for LP in 6 variables. I say K
1 They have worked to have students see that there is a connection between whena system of eq has a unique solution, and whena sq matrix (the coeff matrix ) has an inverse. So I think the sysstem of eq should be ther.e
1 Think that this is just redoing what had been done previously.
1 This is not a coordinat geom but a syntheitic geom knowledge -K?
1 This seems like a straight forward multiply matricies. Which they derived on page 175 through Flying matricies?
1 This will take some reasoning--if they use the zero matrix, then there are infinitely many or no soln depending on the B column. If they use the identity matrix then …But anyway I think this is a nonstarndard problem that causes them to "analyze" R1
1 a(b^x) is purpose
1 calc is tool for solving the system
1 can't really classify
1 ditto
3 eq of a plane in 3 space. Is 806--analyitc geom in 3 space, analogue of 510 in 2 space
4 finding ininverse req use of 602--are we saying its subsumed? Since 602 is recently learned I think it is part of the learning.
1 group activity
1 isn’t the 511 just part of the 507?
1 looks are deceiving due to scale of domain/range
1 make a copy of the given graph could be 1501--meaning of graph?
7 need X
1 needs to be consistent with Kick it.
1 not an exponential function since the base of those must be positive. This is something weird.
1 not happy about this but I think that the focus on scale and data display seems best. Isn't 901 subsumed by 907?
1 not happy with this but don't know how to capture that this is about 0
2 not sure How they want them to solve this--use systems? Or think thorugh geometrically
1 number patterns and divisibility and repeated subtraction
1 page 184 Matricies and Linear Systems the matrix eq AX=B is introduced , do we want to also code 614? We have talked about doing this in CME bec. We have used 614 for MANY kinds of algraic equations.
1 perimeter of a rectangle 305
1 really a question about 1
1 should be using exp function not doing by hand
1 tan 45=1 is that 1301?
1 these start in function land and then move to algebra world, hence the 6**
1 they want the kids to use the two teq -1=4a+b and -2=7a+b to solve for a and b, rather than use the two points to find the equaiton of theline so I say 602 and I think the 510 for the eq of the line they get for the ans is subumed?
1 they want the kids to use the two teq 4=3a+b and 1=5a+b to solve for a and b, rather than use the two points to find the equaiton of theline so I say 602 and I think the 510 for the eq of the line they get for the ans is subumed?
1 they will use graphs of the functions to compare
1 this can be thoughtof on the level of when do 3 linear equ in three unkns give a unique solution so I'd put a 602 too.
1 this is 510 (changing to slope intercept form… solve for y)
1 this is really just solving a system of 4 eq in 4 unks.
1 this will be hard since one can add the entries, but since the sizes of the matricies is different, this will require some careful formal thinking. This point about when you can and cannot add doe not seem to be made in the text.
1 transcendental numbers and their history
1 two lines in space can be skew--which is neather paralell or intersecting. So I think R
1 503?
1 505?
1 506?
1 603 bec system of ineq for some reagons
1 714 also bec there are three possilbiites the lines are colinear, the lines intersect at one pt, the lines don’t intersect.
1 714 bec the regions are formed first synthetically--no eq, just geometric thinking line sin planes
1 714 bec they are not using coordinate geomtery here, but syntheic geom instead.
2 804 is correct this is aboutlines and planes in 3-d coordinate geometry- it's not 702
1 806 for the eq of planes in space. But the question is are students thinking of the planes and using knowledge form the synthetic gem domain? (eg 2 planed inter sect in a aline, thre planes could intersect in a line, a point or not at all?) I don’t' think that they have ways to describes lines in space using coordinate geometry.
1 1301-tan as a "basic ratio?
1 1503 bec there appears to be only on evariable, "t" then # of tickets. They are treating the cost of production as a constant so the function is a linear function of one varible in t.
1 1503 bec there appears to be only on evariable, h the 3 of hours worked. They are treating the amount of savings he starts with as a constant so the function is a linear function of one varible inh.
3 1508 bc using previous fxn language, 608 bc developing laws of exponents
1 1508 bc using previous fxn language, 608 bc developing laws of exponents, Student develops the context
1 1517 is not appropriate--it just asks them to write and expression--not function, Also It is part of writing the "ojective function of the LP problem som just 1404
